Electric cars – Vehicles of the Future

Environmentalists have been harping upon the harmful effects of burning fossil fuels since ages. Awareness about global warming and the climate crisis is also at an all time high. However, one cannot undermine the undeniable importance of diesel and petrol-run cars and other automobiles. Cars are the markers of our modern civilization, which cannot be undone without significant impact to the progress of civilization, and comfort in our daily lives alike. The solution to such a paradox, lies in cars, but not those which are run on gasoline – we are talking about electric cars.

Electric vehicles in the modern era

An electric car is an automobile that runs on electric power stored in a rechargeable battery. It is highly energy-efficient, with no direct emission of harmful greenhouse gases or other pollutants. Since the 2010s, electric cars are on the rise in the automobile market – experts say a major cause is the technological advancement in this field in the last decade. We all know about the Tesla brand, run by Elon Musk, one of the world’s leading innovators. With prices of an individual vehicle dropping from exorbitant rates due to mass production, global demand has hit an all-time high. 2019 saw 2.1 million sales globally, and currently 2.6% of all car sales are electric vehicles (EV).

Advantages and disadvantages

The main hindrance lies in the next-to non-existent infrastructure that supports EVs, specifically, charging stations. It will take a dedicated herculean effort by governments to install sufficient infrastructure, which right now they have no incentive in doing, since there are so less electric cars on the road!

However, the eventual expansion and dominance of EVs in the automobile segment is undeniable, simply due to one fact – the upcoming global climate crisis. Also, with the already surging oil prices, what will you use when there’s no more oil to fill your tanks?

It’s sure that electric vehicles are the future. However, what stays problematic is the way in which we enter into this future. Proper planning and incentivizing by respective governments will ensure a smooth and safe passage for humanity into the world of the future.
