Aspire with care

POOR CHOICES- RECIPE FOR DEPRESSION, DEJECTION AND DEFEAT

It is human nature to aspire and as such, we are living in the shadows of our aspirations. But do we ever stop to think whether things what we aspire for are really what we need?

For a man who is ridden by hunger and poverty, his next meal is all he aspires for at that moment. But what after that? Similarly, for a man with abundant wealth and worldly riches, his aspirations may be for the simpler things in life such as a friend he can relate to, laugh heartily and talk to or maybe a simple home cooked meal made by his mother.

The measure of human suffering is often directly related to our own innermost fears and complexes rather than the gravity of a situation we are in. The other day I read about a stockbroker who was filthy rich but had a bad run and went into heavy debt. He committed suicide by jumping off the balcony of his plush high rise apartment. I thought to myself, I never even had what he had, leave alone what he may have aspired for but I am much happier today than the poor guy may have been in those last days of his miserable existence.

Ambition drives man and is necessary for him to stretch and reach for his goal  but if one is really concerned about one’s life and future one should be careful what one aspires for. Aspire for wisdom-the wisdom to make the right choices. Aspire for virtues, virtues that drive us to do greater good. Aspire to be one that others will look up to as a role model in terms of goodness, honesty and integrity. Everything else will come when wedded strongly to these attributes. This is what was taught by saints and sages ages ago and successful people worldwide have just this to say –maybe in different words.

Before you venture to change the environment, change yourself. The environment will have no option but to follow.
